In our latest Freight Waves article, Borderless Coverage explores the importance of combining insurance and technology to mitigate your risk.

As safety remains a top concern for cross-border shipping, risk mitigation is critical for cross border trade.

The article notes how over 5,000 cargo thefts were reported in Mexico during the first half of 2021 alone. The items most stolen include food and beverage items, clothing and footwear, auto parts, steel, tires, and alcoholic beverages.

Given carriers aren’t required to provide coverage for shipments in Mexico, it often leaves shippers on the hook for damages. Mexico only requires carriers to be liable for $0.025 for every pound transported compared to $2 per pound in Canada and up to $1 Million in the US.

The article notes that criminals in Mexico have been using jamming units that jam the signals for tracking devices, reducing recovery capability.
