Maximizing the Potential of B-1 Drivers in Cross-Border Operations

March 28, 2024

As cross-border freight movements between the U.S. and Mexico continue to surge, discussions surrounding the utilization of B-1 truck drivers from Mexico are becoming increasingly prevalent. At Borderless Coverage, we recognize the pivotal role that B-1 drivers play in facilitating seamless cross-border transportation.

While there has been hesitancy in the past regarding insuring fleets with B-1 drivers, we are witnessing a gradual shift in attitudes. Mark Vickers, Executive Vice President and Head of International Logistics, notes that insurance providers are beginning to adapt to the unique requirements of cross-border carriers. “We have many of our standard insurance providers, insurtechs, and captives starting to play ball with us for the first time, and this timing is perfect,” says Vickers.

One of the primary challenges in insuring fleets with B-1 drivers has been the disparity in driver performance tracking between the U.S. and Mexico. While U.S. drivers have Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs), Mexican drivers rely on PSP files, which offer limited insights into their driving history.

Stephanie Alegria, Account Executive at Reliance Partners, acknowledges these challenges but highlights the strengths that B-1 drivers bring to cross-border operations. Despite the lack of comprehensive performance documentation, B-1 drivers often demonstrate exceptional driving skills and a strong commitment to safety.

“The extensive process to become a B-1 driver creates drivers that tend to be more cautious and more involved in operations, leading to fewer accidents and violations,” notes Alegria.

Advancements in technology, such as ELD data sharing, are also contributing to a shift in perceptions. With improved monitoring capabilities, carriers can now more effectively track driver performance, alleviating concerns about driver accountability.

At Borderless Coverage, we view the inclusion of B-1 drivers as a positive step towards enhancing safety and efficiency in cross-border transportation. We are committed to advocating for a better understanding of the value these drivers bring to the industry.

While change takes time, we anticipate that opportunities for B-1 drivers will continue to expand as the transportation and insurance sectors embrace global perspectives and technological advancements.
